Bay County School Board members considered recommended instructional materials for a newly required personal finance and money management elective during the board's advertised public hearing on April 8. Staff said teachers piloted three Department of Education-approved options and ranked them before the board took action.
Elena (identified in the meeting as the presenter) said the district piloted the course this year while awaiting the state-approved short list; the teachers who will teach the course (high school social studies teachers) reviewed and ranked the three DOE-approved options and recommended the district adopt materials accordingly. Elena said the state's final approval was expected this month and that teachers had provided substantive input in the selection process.
Board members spoke in support; one member called the adoption "20 years too late" in reference to the district's need for financial-literacy instruction. The board moved the recommended materials forward for adoption under the public hearing process; a motion carried during the hearing and staff said the item will continue through the adoption timeline consistent with other instructional-material adoptions.
