County outlines timeline for Sugarloaf fire station design, pursues grant for Layton site

Kevin (county staff) gave the Board of County Commissioners an update on two fire‑station projects during the April 16 meeting.
Sugarloaf Fire Station: Staff said the design will reach completion this month, permits are expected by July, and the county will use a temporary station during construction. The target for station occupancy is October 2026. Kevin described legal and property issues resolved since 2022 — including settlement of litigation with a Wi‑Fi operator and acquisition of a DOT right‑of‑way — that had delayed the project. He said a public‑private partnership with volunteers and a private partner had enabled the project to move forward.
Layton Fire Station: Staff summarized options and said three parcels are owned by the City of Layton and three by the county; together they total roughly the size of other recent stations. Staff said they will explore a possible U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development small cities (CDBG) grant opportunity that now allows fire stations and could provide a substantial portion of the cost if awarded. Staff cautioned that HUD/CDBG grants come with additional administrative requirements and may not cover municipal components such as a future city hall in a combined building.
Commissioners praised the public‑private partnership model used for Sugarloaf and asked staff to keep pursuing grant opportunities and design work for both projects.
