Tracy Smith, coordinator of student support, told the board the idea originated from a conversation with a district leader about ways central staff could support schools during a difficult stretch between winter and spring breaks. “We each team really took ownership over that attendance zone,” Smith said, describing four central-services teams assigned to school attendance zones.
Why it matters: Board members said the program gave central staff first‑hand exposure to building-level needs and provided short-term help to schools during a busy time of year. Smith said activities included sweeping floors, car-rider and cafeteria duty, and staffing a school reward store called the “Bulldog Bucks” store.
Smith described working with school staff at Valley Institute running the Bulldog Bucks store, a quarterly reward event where students exchange earned tokens for items. Smith said the store day allowed central staff to have face-to-face time with students and teachers they otherwise would not encounter.
Board members who commented said the program was mutually beneficial: it helped school staff with practical tasks and helped central staff reconnect with students and classroom routines. Several board members urged continuing the program and expanding similar activities.
