The highway commissioner reviewed county and state highway operations, recent and upcoming projects, the county’s recent trip to Washington, D.C., and equipment procurement costs.
On county operations, crews have been clearing brush for a planned construction project on County Highway 00 and performing crack-filling and shoulder work on multiple local roads. State crews focused on blacktop patching and have provided support at the county campus.
The commissioner described attending a Washington, D.C., advocacy meeting meant to influence transportation funding and program rules. He said counties push for continued formula funding flexibility (which he said represents roughly 80% of federal funds returning to Wisconsin) and more discretionary funding in the next transportation reauthorization. He also listed priorities discussed in D.C.: timely appropriations, preserving tax-exempt treatment for municipal bonds and consideration of transportation funding mechanisms such as a national electric-vehicle registration fee.
On county finance and purchases, the commissioner reported monthly bills totaling about $463,007.85 and discussed truck procurement. He explained the usual distinction between purchasing a truck chassis and the later “body build” phase that adds a dump body, plow/wings and brine systems. He estimated a chassis purchase typically runs $140,000–$160,000 and body builds about $180,000, though costs may fall over time as stainless-steel components allow transfers between trucks.
The commissioner also described a multi-department plan to create a countywide vehicle policy that will set common rules for vehicle use and that the sheriff’s department will need tailored provisions because of operational differences. No formal votes on these items were recorded at the meeting.
