Work crews removed the old bridge and formed concrete elements for new pours. Geotechnical testing showed that piles initially encountered a layer at about 50 feet below grade and that the first truly load-bearing bedrock was another 15 feet deeper than that. Property staff said the contractor had added pile length in the estimate to compensate and that any increase in cost would likely be limited.
The contractor Larson submitted a bid of about $523,000; staff said the county had previously estimated roughly $600,000 for the work. County staff said Larson’s bid included unit prices for some items.
During excavation crews found an unmarked fiber-optic line running east–west through the site. Staff marked the line and contacted Frontier, which initially said the line was not theirs; plans had shown it as Frontier’s. Staff stated the line currently appears to be powered down and nonfunctional. They will continue coordination to positively identify the owner and confirm whether piles can be drilled through that location. Property staff said project completion is still planned for May 17.
Staff said the bridge contractor was proceeding, with some pours scheduled and follow-up drilling planned once utility ownership is clarified. No change order or formal contract amendment was reported at the meeting.
