District adopts new Spanish world-language curriculum, plans phased seven-year rollout

The Waukesha School District Teaching and Learning Committee on April 3 approved the adoption of a new Spanish world-language curriculum, scheduling a phased, multi-year rollout for course levels and advanced-placement offerings.
The committee voted 5-0 to approve a seven-year adoption for Spanish 1 and 2 and AP materials with a phased fold-in of Spanish 3 and 4 across subsequent years. D. Garcia, a district staff member who presented the recommendation, said the district is proposing a seven-year adoption for Spanish 1 and 2 and AP resources, then adding Spanish 3 the next year and Spanish 4 the following year so full implementation would occur in the 2027–28 school year.
The recommendation drew on pilot data from eAchieve, the district said. Staff presented first-year implementation results reported by eAchieve that showed, for students using the recommended resource, B-or-better rates of 73% in Spanish 1, 83% in Spanish 2, 91% in Spanish 3 and 100% in Spanish 4. An AP Spanish Language class listed a 67% B-or-better rate among five students in the pilot. "Overall, we think this is a good indicator that students are finding success with this resource," D. Garcia said.
Staff described the implementation plan: a class set of five textbooks per building, a shift to an all-digital format to support the district's technology initiative, six hours of direct professional development plus ongoing office hours, teacher preparation materials and curriculum design work during the summer to produce syllabi, common assessments and rubrics. The presentation listed a budget figure on the slide and an estimate for professional-development hourly pay; staff said those items are captured in the materials presented.
Committee members who piloted the resources praised their organization and sequence. One board member said the resource was "very well done" and noted the online materials were easy to navigate. Staff also described alignment opportunities with eAchieve so district and online courses can share curriculum, professional development and assessment approaches.
The motion to approve the Spanish world-language resources as presented passed unanimously. Staff will proceed with purchases, professional development scheduling and curriculum alignment work, with ongoing monitoring and potential renewal conversations at the end of adoption terms.
