The Chandler Unified School District governing board on March 26 approved a $1,951,283.04 contract with Willman Construction to renovate the media center at Bologna Elementary School.
Mr. Dunn presented the Bologna project — the second of two reimagining projects on the meeting agenda — saying the scope includes interior and exterior demo adjacent to the media center, new storefront doors and windows, ADA bathroom upgrades, HVAC and life‑safety system work, outdoor learning spaces and finishes designed to support immersive technology, dual‑language integration and career‑literacy instruction.
The contract is funded from the district’s 2019 bond capital projects list; Mr. Dunn said the contract complies with procurement rules under the GPA vehicle cited in the board packet. The board discussed local competition (a nearby charter school), facility investment strategy and remaining bond balances. Mr. Dunn and administration noted roughly $14 million of bond funds remained uncommitted for future needs and safety work.
Board member comments were largely positive about the instructional and exploratory goals of the design; one board member expressed concern about preserving bond dollars for other safety or infrastructure needs. The motion to approve the Willman Construction contract for Bologna passed 3–1.
District staff said the design for Bologna is tailored to site needs and that professional development will accompany the physical renovations so teachers can align instruction to the new career‑literacy standards.
