Staunton general registrar previews early voting schedule, registration deadlines for Nov. 4 election

Christy Lynn Haas, the general registrar for Staunton City, briefed the Staunton City Council on Sept. 11 on preparations for the Nov. 4 general election, including early voting dates, ballot contents and registration deadlines.
Haas said the ballot will include governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, members of the House of Delegates, the 30th and 6th districts (as listed on the ballot), and local offices including commonwealth’s attorney, sheriff, commissioner of revenue and treasurer. Staunton currently has 19,062 registered voters, she said, and approximately 1,200 absentee ballots were being prepared for mailing.
“Early voting is going to start on Sept. 19 and will run through Nov. 1, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday,” Haas said. She added the registrar’s office will be open two Saturdays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, for early voting. Curbside voting will be available at the same three locations used previously: a spot on Central Avenue across from the mural and two spaces in the Old SunTrust parking lot.
Haas also reminded the council that the deadline to register to vote or to request an absentee ballot is Oct. 24. She said the registration cutoff changed after a recent General Assembly action that shortened the pre-election “close of books” period from 21 days to 11 days, moving the registration deadline closer to Election Day. Same-day registration will remain available during early voting and on Election Day.
Haas said the office completed logic-and-accuracy testing on voting equipment and was prepared to handle early voters. Council members asked clarifying questions about curbside procedures and the location for early voting; Haas confirmed staff will assist voters at the curbside spots and that the registrar’s office will continue to operate from the foyer area in front of council chambers.
The presentation included operational details but did not include polling-place staffing plans or exact absentee-mailing schedules beyond the number of ballots to be mailed.
