Scotts Valley vice mayor announces resignation; council to consider replacement process

At the start of the council’s final business, the vice mayor announced he will tender his resignation to the city clerk on Friday, Sept. 5, and step down as both a council member and vice mayor, citing personal reasons.
“I will tend to my resignation to the city clerk and therefore step down as a council member and as vice mayor,” the vice mayor said during the Sept. 3 council meeting.
Mayor Tim and fellow council members thanked the vice mayor for his service and noted his leadership on transportation, housing, youth programs and inclusivity initiatives. Multiple council members described the departing vice mayor as a constructive collaborator who helped improve the city’s operations and interagency relationships.
City Attorney advised the council that state law gives the council 60 days to either appoint a replacement or call a special election to fill the vacancy. The city will return to a future council meeting with options and estimated costs; staff said they would recommend completing the decision sooner to maintain a full council for upcoming agenda items.
Councilmembers asked staff to agendize replacement-process options at the next meeting so the council can decide whether to appoint a successor or hold a special election and to discuss the timeline and interview procedures if appointment is chosen.
