The Loveland City Council adopted an emergency ordinance on a 7-0 vote to reduce the speed limit on a portion of Riverside Drive/East Kimber Road from 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour.
City Manager Dave Kennedy said staff and the police chief reviewed the stretch after a resident raised safety concerns and that the area, while appearing light industrial, contains several residences and at least one home with children. Kennedy said drivers often accelerate after crossing the railroad tracks, where the first posted sign is 35 mph. "What we want to do is extend the 25 beyond that, overemphasize the 25 both coming in and coming out with the flashing 25 mile an hour speed limit signs," Kennedy said, noting the city plans to order flashing signs that staff believes are effective.
Chief Michael Gabrielson and Kennedy said the change is a public-safety measure and recommended treating it as an emergency to allow faster implementation than a two-reading ordinance schedule would permit. Councilmember Bateman said the transition from 25 to higher speeds across the city line makes the road tricky and supported the safety step. Councilmember Ory also voiced support.
The ordinance was read to the council as an emergency measure and adopted by roll call as Ordinance 83, with the council voting 7-0 to approve the speed reduction ordinance.
