The Loveland City Council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the disposal and sale of a 2016 Ford Explorer that the police department no longer needs.
Chief of Police Michael Gabrielson told council the vehicle was originally scheduled for replacement in 2026 but now requires a major transmission repair. "The cost repair exceeds $6,000," Gabrielson said, and recent repairs combined with the cost of the new repair left the vehicle's post-repair value in the same range, making further repair fiscally imprudent. He said the department removed emergency equipment for reuse and plans to sell the vehicle through the city's online auction vendor, GovDeals.
Gabrielson said staff estimates the vehicle could fetch more than $3,000 at auction but that the exact sale price is unknown. Council asked whether a replacement vehicle would be needed immediately; staff said a replacement is built into the 2026 budget and that the department has spare vehicles to bridge the gap.
The council read a resolution declaring the vehicle surplus inventory and authorizing sale on the city's online auction site. Roll call returned a unanimous yes and Resolution 82 was adopted 7-0.
