Isanti County moves forward with affidavit for tax-forfeited Cambridge laundromat property

Isanti County’s auditor-treasurer presented an affidavit for tax-forfeited property related to the Cambridge Laundromat and Dry Cleaners building and parking lot and the board authorized submission to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) on April 15.
Angie Larson, Isanti County Auditor-Treasurer, said she created the affidavit for submittal to the MPCA and had contacted the agency’s inspector who has previously worked on the site. Larson told the board the MPCA contact was temporarily out of the office but that the county would learn from the MPCA what the next steps and obligations would be.
Commissioners asked whether the county would be required to perform remediation or cleanup once the process started; Larson said she would wait for direction from the MPCA and that obligations likely depend on the condition and presence of hazardous materials. She also explained the property is tax-forfeited to the state because the owner failed to pay property taxes, and that the county acts as the local agent for tax-forfeited properties under state statute.
After discussion Commissioner Christiansen moved and Commissioner Westerberg seconded a motion authorizing the auditor-treasurer to submit the property affidavit to the MPCA; the motion passed by voice vote.
