Residents press council on fate of historic state hospital; mayor says demolition is state project

EVANSTON, Wyo. — Two local residents urged the Evanston City Council to intervene to stop the planned demolition of a historic state hospital, but council leaders said the facility is under state control and recommended residents contact state legislators.

At public participation, Cathy Cook of 912 Maine asked, “What is the city doing to stop the demolition of the historic state hospital?” The presiding officer replied that the council had discussed the issue but that the project “is not the city's project.” When Cook pressed whether the city could make it a city project, the presiding officer reiterated, “It's in their hands.”

Cindy Crawford added a follow-up question asking how residents might appeal the state's decision. The presiding officer suggested contacting local legislators — both representatives and the state senator — and advised constituents to reach out to any or all of them.
