Jefferson Elementary students present student‑council activities to school board

Students and staff from Jefferson Elementary presented to the Norfolk Public Schools Board Wednesday evening about the school’s newly launched student council and recent activities.
A Jefferson staff presenter described the council’s formation this year as part of the district communications strategic action plan and said ten students were selected by a combination of teacher votes and schoolwide student ballots. Staff guidance and classroom teachers supported the student‑led activities, which the presenters said were intended to develop leadership, model expectations and strengthen family engagement.
Student council members described activities they have helped run: a family pizza night where students staffed and ran a bingo room; Veterans Day outreach at a local Hy‑Vee (helping veterans and clearing tables); a weekly snack cart that serves as a learning lab for budgeting; building buddies where older students help younger classmates; and fundraising/dine‑out nights partnered with the PTO. Students also said the council helps prepare materials for assemblies and runs a monthly leadership meeting where they review expectations and plan events.
Board members participated in a brief, on‑stage student interview activity and took a group photo with the students and staff at the end of the presentation. The presentation was accepted as information; no action was required.
