Public Utilities committee awards sewer and water contracts, approves GPS purchase for landfill operations

Berkeley County’s Public Utilities Committee awarded contracts for the St. Stephen’s Graham sewer project and for water-main improvements that will provide a new line and an emergency connection to the Charleston system for the Brittleford Ridge subdivision.
The water-main project also includes a redundant line serving the East Cooper water system under the tailrace canal, near the county’s fire training center. Committee members discussed the approximate location and confirmed the alignment runs adjacent to an existing line under the tailrace canal.
Separately, the committee approved procurement of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment for landfill dozers and compactors. The sole bid received from Jobsite Technologies was initially $125,267.50; after negotiation procurement secured a revised price of $106,272.50 and staff requested an additional $6,272.50 from the R&R fund to cover the overrun versus the $100,000 budget. Staff explained the GPS will enable real-time fill-sequence tracking, compaction optimization and footprint boundary enforcement to maximize airspace and improve safety. The motion to approve the purchase with the additional R&R funding passed by voice vote.
