Council awards cemetery/park maintenance contract to local caretaker; extends lawn‑pest bid window

The Kanosh Town Council approved a six‑month contract for park and cemetery maintenance and awarded the work to Fernando Gutierrez after reviewing two competitive bids. Fernando’s proposal was $4,000 per month; the council said it chose him over a lower $3,700 monthly bid because of his demonstrated experience maintaining the town’s park and cemetery and the advantage of no learning curve for the role.
During the meeting a council member moved and another seconded the motion to award the contract to Fernando; the chair called the vote and the motion carried with the council voting in favor. Council members noted that Fernando had previously agreed to provide hourly services for work outside the scope of the contract and that the contract can cover hourly emergency or incidental tasks if needed.
Separately, the council noted a bid for lawn and pest control that appeared significantly higher than previous service totals and extended the bid period to allow Elite Lawn Care an opportunity to submit a responsive bid. The council set a new deadline of May 9 for bids on cemetery, park and ballpark mowing and weed control so the council can compare multiple proposals at its next meeting. Staff was asked to notify potential bidders of the extended window.
The council also approved small purchases for a July 24 community celebration: 20 pairs of tongs and two additional folding tables used for serving. Those items were approved by motion and recorded as carried.
In separate agenda items, Jennifer Woods asked the council to reimburse the Kanosh First Ward Young Women for $182.84 in candy purchases for the town Easter egg hunt. Council members asked staff to track donations and reimbursements and to include any final reimbursement request on the May agenda; no final reimbursement was approved at the meeting, though council members expressed willingness to consider reimbursement up to prior years’ levels.
The town clerk will prepare the maintenance contract paperwork and, if necessary, publish the updated contract terms and hourly rates for outside work; staff will also accept revised mowing/bid submissions through May 9 and report results at the next meeting.
