Bryce Canyon City approved repairs to a town Dodge truck and discussed several parks and grounds maintenance proposals, including potential pickleball courts, shade additions, and purchasing aerator and dethatching equipment to reduce recurring contractor costs.
City staff recounted a winter incident in which a town truck slid into a fence post while plowing snow. The dealership’s body-shop estimate was about $3,700; a second estimate from Dealer Collusion was about $2,700. Staff provided the lower estimate and a Seal Collision invoice of $2,621.57 and asked the council to approve repairs, with a not-to-exceed cap of $3,000. A motion to authorize the repairs passed by voice vote; the motion was recorded as moved by Mike and seconded by Gary.
Staff told the council Dealer Collusion had the truck and had ordered parts but would not start repairs until the council approved. The shop estimated repairs would take three to four days once started. The council discussed a minor price difference between repairing the existing door and installing a new door; staff noted a new door would be roughly $100 more but could be faster.
During department reports, council members discussed park improvements and water-saving measures: adding pickleball courts, reducing turf in some areas to save water, widening sidewalks, and adding shaded seating areas near playgrounds. Staff said they would consult Jones and Newton (consultants/vendors mentioned in the meeting) about design options and obtain stakeholder input from regular park users.
On grounds maintenance, staff proposed buying an aerator (quoted around $3,700) and possibly a power rake/dethatcher (quoted about $5,800) to perform spring and annual treatments in-house rather than paying a contractor. Staff said labor to rent or hire a contractor cost roughly the same or more than buying equipment over a short period. The council asked staff to obtain bids and return with a recommendation.
Finance business: the council approved warrants as presented by voice vote following the staff report on recent purchases, including snow-plow and water/sewer expenses and equipment related to Fourth of July fireworks.
