Commission outlines neighborhood-of-focus work, partners and spring cleanup events

The Clean Pittsburgh Commission on April 10 detailed a two-year neighborhood-of-focus strategy and shared a calendar of spring events from member organizations including Pennsylvania Resources Council and Allegheny Cleanways.
Co-chair Lissa Eberhardt said the commission's neighborhoods of focus for the coming two years are Crafton Heights, Sheridan, Elliott and Marshall-Shadeland. The subcommittee is compiling partner resources and is developing an outreach plan to let residents know what services the commission and partners can provide. "Our neighborhoods of focus are Crafton Heights, Sheridan, Elliott, and Marshall Shadeland. So that's that's where we're gonna be putting our attention towards the next 2 years," Eberhardt said.
Members discussed targeted services that can be offered, including PRC e-waste collections, targeted dump-site cleanups by Allegheny Cleanways, riverfront trail work by Friends of the Riverfront (litter pickup, mural/graffiti work, invasive species management and planting), and ordinance enforcement from the city's environmental services team. Eberhardt and others suggested a mailer or door-knock outreach and asked planning staff to coordinate with neighborhood planners so commission questions can be included in summer comprehensive-plan engagement.
Upcoming events and member updates mentioned during the meeting included: a PRC neighborhood e-waste collection in Homewood on April 26; an Allegheny Cleanways Hazelwood cleanup on April 19 (partners will also discuss a pilot trash-trapping project on the river); an Earth Day litter cleanup and follow-up social event organized by CleanWays and Goodlander around April 22; and outreach tabling at the Parks Conservancy Earth Month event at McKinley Park on April 19.
Members discussed operating a neighborhood subcommittee that can meet separately to handle tactical coordination (dump-site targeting, volunteer deployment, local drop-off logistics) and then bring brief summaries to the main commission meeting. Planning staff suggested involving neighborhood and open-space planners and tying neighborhood questions to the city's summer engagement for the comprehensive plan.
