ADR recommends revisions to gate design at 117 Laurel Grove: keep deer fence, limit solid gate area

The Ross Advisory Design Review reviewed a proposal to install a stained cedar/redwood automatic driveway gate, exterior lighting and a 6‑foot fence at 117 Laurel Grove and recommended the applicant adopt a more transparent gate treatment consistent with the town’s design code.
Alex (planning staff) presented the plan and noted the proposal includes a solid wood section near the gate and a deer fence along other portions of the front yard. The applicant’s representative (Brooks) said the solid portion was requested for privacy and to address deer that frequently jump 4‑foot fences; Brooks offered an alternate gate design during the meeting that would make the upper portion 50% open while keeping the lower portion solid.
ADR members agreed a 6‑foot deer fence is appropriate for much of the front yard but that driveway gates must be no more than 50% solid per town code. Members suggested using the existing stone wall height as a datum so the solid portion would be the lower fraction of the gate and an open pattern above, and recommended the applicant revise the gate to increase openness above the datum line. The ADR asked staff to confirm gate proportions and to forward the recommendation to the Town Council.
