La Habra outlines centennial activities, spring and summer event schedule

City staff updated the Community Services Commission on La Habra’s centennial promotions and an active community-events calendar that stretches from spring into summer.
The centennial and events updates are intended to boost local awareness and participation across businesses, nonprofits and volunteers during the city’s 100th-year celebrations and seasonal programming.
Staff urged commissioners to follow the city’s La Habra Centennial social channels (Instagram: LaHabra100) and promoted a “100 Things to Do in La Habra” campaign. The department plans a centennial map available for purchase (a historic price point referenced as $20.11) and a Legends and Legacy dinner planned for Aug. 21 to commemorate the city’s history.
Staff announced immediate upcoming events and sales figures: volunteer recognition is set for April 24; a grand opening for Las Reinis Women’s Club Park is scheduled for April 30 at 5 p.m.; a hiring fair recently resulted in hiring eight teacher’s assistants and several recreation leaders for summer programs; the senior dance had about 80 registrations at the time of reporting; the glow-in-the-dark egg hunt had 64 spots sold and the spring family extravaganza had 108 wristbands sold.
Love La Habra volunteer day was noted as seeking volunteers (staff reported about 30 volunteers signed at the time of the meeting and a pool of roughly 25 project submissions); staff are recruiting high-school and community volunteers and accepting material and financial donations for projects. Staff said sign-ups and project submissions are available on the La Habra website.
The Movies in the Park summer schedule will launch on May 16 at Portola Park; staff described efforts to pair each movie with themed activities (examples: a wiffle-ball game for Sandlot and Polynesian-themed activities for Moana). The city plans a range of family events including a pancake breakfast, helicopter drop and carnival-style activities.
Commissioners asked whether the city can incorporate Day of the Dead programming into the October community open house; staff said they were reviewing how to incorporate cultural programming without conflicting with other local events and acknowledged the date falls near Nov. 1 (traditional Day of the Dead observance).
Staff also asked commissioners to RSVP for donor-and-volunteer recognition events and noted continued outreach to recruit businesses and organizations to participate in the centennial map and related promotions.
