National Park Service lists three Janesville elementary schools on National Register

The Wisconsin Historical Society informed Janesville staff that the National Park Service added Adams, Roosevelt and Washington elementary schools to the National Register of Historic Places on April 1, according to the weekly list of actions issued by the Park Service.
Planning staff told the Historic Commission that the listings complete a multi-year nomination process that involved the commission, the preservation consultant funded through city-supported effort, and coordination with the School District of Janesville, which owns the properties. Staff said they were still awaiting the Park Service's signed documentation but that the agency's weekly online actions list shows the additions.
Commissioners and staff discussed possible recognition or celebration by the school district; staff said recognition would be up to the district as the property owner and that the commission's role would be supportive if the district requests assistance. Staff said they would follow up and report back to the commission at a future meeting when any district plans are known.
The commission requested staff assistance in preparing certificate frames or acknowledgements for the schools; a commissioner asked whether a departing commissioner could assemble frames. Staff indicated they will provide updates at the next meeting once they receive official documentation from the National Park Service.
