Landmarks Commission awards 2025 certificates to W.T. Lyle building and posthumous honor for David Kopp

The City of Waukesha Landmarks Commission on April 2 named two 2025 award recipients: a Certificate of Merit for the W.T. Lyle building at 910–914 Clinton Street and the John Schenkinecke Spirit of Preservation Award to the late David (Dave) Kopp.
Commission staff presented the W.T. Lyle building nomination, describing it as a prominent local example of commercial Queen Anne architecture with restoration work to window trim, parapets and upper-level brick that included repointing and repainting. Commissioners praised the project. A motion to give the Certificate of Merit to the W.T. Lyle building passed.
The commission then considered the John Schenkinecke Spirit of Preservation Award nomination for David Kopp, who served as the commission's secretary and staff advisor from 1984 to 2010. Staff and multiple past colleagues provided written recollections describing Kopp's role in coordinating multiple historic district nominations, supporting restorations of Manisca Spring and Hobo Spring, managing grants and minutes, and partnering with property owners and other city boards. Family members and past commission members supported the nomination. The commission moved and approved awarding the 2025 John Schenkinecke Spirit of Preservation Award to David Kopp, posthumously.
Both awards were approved by vote during the meeting. Commissioners also discussed follow-up communications and plans for award recognition at upcoming events.
