Finance committee accepts WEDC grant contract to supplement Freeman Alley CIP work

The Waukesha City Finance Committee on April 8 approved a contract with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) to accept a grant award tied to Freeman Alley improvements.
City staff said the Community Development Department applied for the WEDC grant to supplement work planned for Freeman Alley as part of the city’s capital improvement plan (CIP). Staff told the committee the CIP funds were already committed and that the Freedman Alley placemaking plan was shovel-ready, factors staff said helped secure the grant.
The committee had previously approved a resolution authorizing the city to apply for the grant; the action on April 8 was to approve the grant contract. A committee member moved to approve the item; Alderman Bartels seconded and the committee voted unanimously to approve the contract.
Staff said the grant will help defray costs of elements in the Freeman Alley plan and reduce the need for higher future CIP requests for the same work.
