Council approves Brisket Cook-Off with revised closure to South Plaza; asks staff to adopt an events checklist

The Brawley City Council on April 1 approved a request by the Imperial Valley Cattle Call/Queen Royalty Association to hold the annual Brisket Cook-Off in May, subject to route adjustments that the council ordered staff to coordinate.

Event organizers had requested closure of Main Street between North and South Plaza; business owners and council members raised concerns that closing Main Street and the North Plaza has in prior years conflicted with other longstanding events and hurt plaza businesses. After discussion, council approved the cook-off with a modification: the primary closure and cook-team staging will be shifted to the South Plaza area (from the Elks/City parking-lot area toward the chamber block) so Main Street and North Plaza remain open for other events and businesses.

Council asked staff to finalize a map and closure plan with the applicant, public works, police and fire, and return with any needed encroachment permits; staff and the chamber agreed to coordinate placement of vendors, porta-potties, security fencing around any alcohol service, and traffic control. Council also directed staff to return at the next meeting with a draft events checklist and a master calendar to reduce event conflicts and to ensure affected businesses are notified during the permitting review process.

The council’s motion to approve the event with the South Plaza modification passed unanimously. Council members stressed that event organizers and the chamber should check business impacts earlier in the planning process to avoid conflicts and called for clearer staff procedures going forward.
