Committee reserves East Clementina and East Tehama as street names for Transbay blocks

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on April 7, 2025, voted 3-0 to recommend that the Board reserve and establish the street names East Clementina Street and East Tehama Street for new one‑block segments between Main and Beale Streets as part of the Transbay redevelopment plan.

Supervisor Matt Dorsey introduced the resolution and said the naming would support affordable housing developments at Transbay Block 2 and Block 4 and the future Block 3 park; he also noted positive feedback from the Transbay Community Advisory Committee. Cathal Hennessy of Public Works described the addressing issue: because Clementina and Tehama historically begin at First Street, extending the streets westward without adding the east prefix would create negative address numbers for properties east of the current start point. Public Works worked with the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII), the Port and the Department of Building Inspection mapping group and recommended adding the cardinal direction to create East Clementina and East Tehama and establish addresses that will allow a childcare center and retail frontage to proceed with permitting.

Supervisor Bilal Mahmood asked about the naming process and public outreach; Public Works said the typical process includes outreach led by the development sponsor and coordination with neighborhood groups and a check for conflicting names before bringing a legislative resolution forward. No public speakers addressed the item at the committee hearing. Supervisor Mahmood moved the resolution recommending the street name reservations to the full Board; Vice Chair Supervisor Cheyenne Chen and Chair Supervisor Mirna Melgar voted aye and the motion passed.

Public Works said the committee will return for formal acceptance of the constructed streets once construction is complete.
