Council extends NV5 engineering agreement for one year to maintain permit-review capacity

The Brawley City Council on April 1 authorized Amendment 3 to extend the city’s contract with engineering firm NV5 for one additional year, adding $85,000 and bringing the total three-year contract value to about $251,000.
City staff recommended the extension because the city has been unable to hire a licensed civil engineer for the role that provides the city-stamp and technical reviews required for plan checks, grading permits and other engineering services. Public Works staff said NV5 offers a suite of specialties — civil, traffic, structural and hydrology — and has been responsive to the city’s needs, performing remote plan reviews and local site visits.
The contract extension preserves continuity while staff prepares a formal request for proposals for future engineering services or while the city completes recruitment for an in-house licensed civil engineer. City staff said NV5 typically provides two- to three-week turnaround on project reviews; specialty subconsultant services within NV5’s organization are included in the contract estimate.
Council approved the amendment by unanimous vote. Staff will return later with a solicitation plan or with a recruitment update for a licensed city engineer, depending on progress before the amended contract expires.
