San Marcos proclaims April 2025 Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month

Mayor Jane Houston on behalf of the San Marcos City Council proclaimed April 2025 as Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month, citing the role of mathematical reasoning in science, engineering, art and business.
The proclamation said the “language, reasoning, and analytical processes of mathematics form the foundations of science, art, engineering and technology, and many types of businesses,” and called on residents to participate in events that raise appreciation for mathematics and statistics.
The proclamation pointed to local partnerships that promote mathematics education. A representative of Texas MathWorks thanked the city for its support and noted collaborations with the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District and Texas State University. A Texas State University Department of Mathematics representative said the university and district will continue summer math camps—this year at Miller—and recalled that San Marcos has sent a team to the Primary Mathematics World Contest in past years.
"We very much appreciate the support from the city of San Marcos and from you as mayor," a MathWorks representative said at the podium. A Texas State representative added that the university has worked with the school district for years and expressed appreciation for the city’s continued backing.
The proclamation and remarks did not propose or adopt any new city ordinance or budget changes; they recognize and promote local educational programming and partnerships.
The city hosted students and faculty from Texas State and representatives from the school district during the proclamation presentation.
