Holyoke student Malachi’s design chosen for PEC logo; finalists to be honored at ribbon cutting

Erin, a staff member, presented the new PEC logo and said the winning design was created by Malachi, a sixth grader at Metcalfe who will attend Peck next year.
“The student design, this is the student Malachi who will be he's a sixth grader at Metcalfe right now. He'll be at Peck, next year,” Erin said while showing the professionally rendered version of the student’s original art. Erin said the design motif Malachi emphasized was “the idea of fire.”
Erin said the contest drew several finalists; the graphic designer refined the chosen entry and the city will recognize Malachi and invite the five other finalists to the ribbon cutting. She added the design received front-page coverage in the Republican.
Committee members praised the initiative. One member said the logo “looks very nice” and that feedback has been “really powerful really positive.” The committee said it will award finalists certificates and T-shirts and capture a before-and-after photograph of Malachi’s original sketch and the final rendition.
This item was a presentation and caused no formal votes. Erin said additional recognition of finalists and a photo opportunity will be included during the ribbon-cutting activities already scheduled for Aug. 14 (rain date Aug. 15).
