At the April 7 meeting the board heard from North Davidson High School—s Teaching as a Profession teacher and students. Four seniors were announced as recipients of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarship ($40,000 over four years).
Board members recognized the Teaching as a Profession (TAAP) program at North Davidson High School and heard from students enrolled in the district-wide Career and Technical Education initiative.
Lauren Norton, who said she is the sole instructor in the district for the Teaching as a Profession program, described a three-course honors sequence culminating in an internship and said students who complete the program with a B average can qualify for college credit at partnering institutions. Students from Ledford, Oak Grove, West Davidson and North Davidson take the TAAP courses at North Davidson, Norton said.
Norton and students also announced four recipients of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarship, described in the meeting as $40,000 awards (stated as $10,000 renewable annually for four years): Maggie Deremer (Appalachian State University, elementary education), Zoe Taylor (Appalachian State University, elementary education with art concentration), Mackenzie Wasser (North Carolina State University, elementary education), and Sarah White (University of North Carolina at Charlotte, elementary and special education). Students and the teacher described internships at local elementary and middle schools and spoke about hands-on learning and community formed in the class.
The board and district leaders congratulated students and encouraged graduates to consider returning to Davidson County to teach. The recognition was ceremonial and no board action was required.
