Students recognized for state wrestling wins; middle school students present club projects

The Canyon City Schools Board of Education on April 14 recognized two student wrestlers and heard a series of student-led club presentations from a middle school.
The board and the Canyon City Police Department’s school resource officers honored Jack and Kate Dougherty for winning state wrestling championships. Jordan St. Louis and Ryan Chan, school resource officers with the Canyon City Police Department, presented the student-spotlight awards and praised the siblings’ dedication. According to the presentation, Kate Dougherty finished the season undefeated with a 30‑0 record and won the girls 135‑pound division; Jack Dougherty finished his high school wrestling career with a 46‑1 season and won the boys 190‑pound division.
Miss Hamilton introduced student-led club presentations from the district’s middle school exploratory program. Students described a range of after-school clubs they organized and ran, including robotics, trivia, earrings/art, airplane/aviation, puzzles and games, book club focused on fantasy, band/band leadership, PE games (active clubs), chess, and student council activities. Student presenters explained that each club submits a proposal listing needed materials, estimated costs, target grades and a teacher sponsor; students are responsible for running clubs and for finding the teacher sponsor who supervises the meeting.
Board members and district leaders praised the student presenters. Superintendent Mister Hartman thanked teachers, sponsors and families for supporting student initiative and noted the value of extracurricular activities in student engagement. Board members highlighted the Compass Committee and construction tours, and several members complimented the spring musical and student performances.
The recognitions and student presentations were followed by routine business; no formal board action was taken specifically on the club proposals at this meeting.
