Maury County board adopts new K–12 science textbooks, approves $2.43 million purchase

The curriculum recommendation came from the district''s science textbook committee. Presenting the proposal, Mr. Stacy said the board was being asked to "approve this purchase for the entire length of the adoption, which is eight years, and we would like to make this purchase all in one year." He said committee-corrected AP textbook titles were attached as a second document to the request.
The request included projected quantities and a plan for distribution: 5,480 elementary copies, 3,150 middle-school copies and 4,910 high-school copies. Committee members recommended a physical, consumable textbook for students in kindergarten through eighth grade so students may annotate; for grades nine through 12 the recommendation was to provide classroom sets and digital licenses rather than one book per student. Mr. Stacy said publishers''online content and downloads would be available for students who lack home internet access.
Board members asked for clarification about the eight-year adoption cycle and whether it was state required. Mr. Stacy confirmed the adoption cycle aligns with state guidance. Board member Miss Stevenson thanked committee members and said she was pleased K'through—2 students would receive physical books. Several board members asked about lab kits; Mr. Stacy said lab kits were not included and would be considered separately because they are expensive and would likely push the purchase over the budgeted amount.
Mr. Moore moved to approve the adoption and the purchase not to exceed $2,434,733; Miss Stevenson seconded. The chair called the vote and the motion carried.
Budget staff said the $2,434,733 figure represents the remaining textbook budget in the current year; if the purchase exceeded that amount, the board would be asked to authorize use of fund balance. Mr. Stacy said ordering now allows the district to receive and inventory materials before the next school year and avoid starting the year without textbooks.
The board thanked the textbook committee and staff for their work and approved the motion.
