Board approves charter-school policy updates, cancels May 26 meeting and adds Intro to Computer Science course

The Canyon City Schools Board of Education on April 14 approved three charter-school policy updates, canceled the board meeting scheduled for May 26 and approved a new Intro to Computer Science course at Kansas City High School.

The actions address district policy language and administrative timelines for district charter schools and add a new course to the high school curriculum. Board members recorded votes by roll call and the motions carried.

Board members voted to approve the following policy files on first reading and first vote: file LPD (relations with district charter schools), file LBB‑E (intent to apply to become a district charter school, including a required application form), and file LVD‑R (relations with district charter schools with timeline requirements). The board chair called for roll call votes on each motion; members present voted “Aye.” The board clerk recorded the approvals as passed.

Also during new business the board approved cancellation of the May 26, 2025, meeting (Memorial Day) and approved a new course offering, Intro to Computer Science, for Kansas City High School. Both motions passed on roll call vote.

Several policy updates from the Colorado Association of School Boards were presented to the board for information only, including updates to public-participation and complaint policies (file BEDB; file BEDH) and revisions to student disciplinary policies (files JKD/JKE and JKE‑R) to reflect provisions of House Bill 23‑1291. The board chair said those information items will return for first vote at a future meeting.

Superintendent comments and staff reports during the meeting referenced ongoing state testing in April and a recent appearance by the superintendent before a state education committee in support of a compromise on school funding identified in the meeting as House Bill 1320.
