Senator Donate explained the resolution locates the Fruit Loop at East Naples Drive where it meets South Paradise Road and South University Center Drive in Las Vegas and urged the Nevada Department of Transportation to install directional signage. The resolution also encourages the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and the Division of Tourism to include the Fruit Loop’s cultural significance in maps and marketing materials.
Senator Donate offered personal remarks, calling the designation a “long overdue step” to honor the site as a safe haven and a part of Las Vegas’ civil-rights history, noting entertainers and community members who found refuge and community there. There were no floor amendments and no recorded objections; the president announced the resolution was adopted and the order was transmitted to the Assembly.
The resolution urges state and tourism agencies to help mark and interpret the site for visitors and residents.
