County staff explained the lease is needed because the county’s previous south tower (on 300 Avenue) is slated for removal. Installing equipment on the Union Pacific tower should improve radio reach in Harrington and nearby buildings. County counsel reviewed the lease; the annual fee cited during discussion was $6,000. Commissioners voted to enter the lease by motion and voice vote.
County staff said the project will require running fiber to the tower and installing a shelter for equipment. The lease authorizes the county to attach communications equipment on Union Pacific property; staff did not present the full lease text during the meeting but said county counsel reviewed the document. No start date or term length beyond the annual rate was given on the record.
Officials noted the site should provide better in-building coverage for county radio users and that the move is part of an upgrade to the county’s 800 system.
