Board approves door replacement at 101 North Washington Street for privacy

The Winchester City Board of Architectural Review on April 17 approved a certificate of appropriateness for Gregory Becker to replace the front door at 101 North Washington Street.

Becker told the board the existing entry is a 15-light door that offers little privacy and that his proposal would replace the lower nine glass panels with raised wood panels while retaining the upper lights and replacing the transom with a similar five-light transom. “The existing door is a 15 light, all glass…not a lot of privacy in the house,” Becker said.

Board members discussed construction details including simulated versus true divided lights and the door material. Becker said the replacement would be a custom mahogany door with true divided lights. A board member noted the change “looks appropriate to me” and that the new configuration would not substantially change the door’s overall profile.

A motion to approve BAR 25-25230 was made and seconded; the board voted in favor and the certificate was approved. The transcript records spoken approval but does not include a roll-call tally.

The approval covers the specific scope Becker presented: replacing the lower glass panels with wood panels, retaining upper lights, and installing a matching five-light transom. The applicant indicated the door will be mahogany and that the glass will be clear with true divided-light muntins.

The board did not require additional conditions in the meeting record. If Becker makes changes beyond the scope presented to the board, he would be expected to return for further review.
