Kingsburg chamber steps back from July 3 fireworks; council hears schedule of upcoming events and projects

Council members said the Kingsburg Chamber of Commerce has voted to stop managing the city's July 3 fireworks and will discuss contract details with city staff; separate council members outlined an array of upcoming community events and public-works projects.

Councilmember North told the council the chamber "will not do July 3 anymore" and said the chamber intends to meet with city staff about contract updates that will reflect current festival names and roles. City staff said contract negotiations and updates will be handled between the chamber and staff and brought to council as a finalized contract for approval.

Council members also highlighted near-term events and projects: the Kingsburg car show and cruise night (this weekend), the dog park grand opening (recent), Swedish Festival activities beginning May 15 with split-pea soup, pancake breakfasts and other events, and a May 8 joint workshop on the general plan update with the planning commission. The city manager reminded the council that Golden State Boulevard Phase 2 construction is scheduled to begin in Kingsburg on April 28 and that most work is expected to be completed before the car show.

Councilmember reports included community outreach: a May 10 "You Matter Day" community service event on Draper Street with dozens of booths and volunteer projects; the chamber's Fika Friday and a pancake breakfast on May 2; and a Swedish Festival raffle funded by donated meal tickets to give away two Swedish bicycles. Council members asked staff to track the chamber contract and to coordinate support for festival logistics and volunteer recruitment.

The consent calendar and routine items were approved by the council earlier in the meeting. No formal action was taken at the meeting to assign the July 3 event to a new organizer; staff and the chamber will pursue negotiations and return with proposed contract terms for council consideration.
