Midway police report arrests in vehicle burglary string, announce purchase of mobile command center

Midway's police chief told the city council the department has made two arrests in a recent series of vehicle burglaries and thefts and expects more enforcement operations this week.

The chief said detectives have been conducting search warrants and small operations and that arrests already made have produced "a noticeable decrease in these specific crimes." He told the council the current operation involves “a crowd of, Hispanic males that are documented that we're dealing with,” and asked for support as detectives continue enforcement.

The council also heard that the department is acquiring a used mobile command center from another government agency. The chief said the vehicle, purchased “for pennies on the dollar,” will give officers a place out of extreme heat and cold during extended incidents and community events. He described interior radios and workspace for incident command, and said the unit should arrive in roughly a month, "just in time to hit our busy season in the summer."

Council members thanked officers for their work and for the welfare checks they perform in the community. A council member asked whether tickets or warnings were being used for speeding complaints; the chief said officers exercise discretion and consider a driver's record and the totality of circumstances when deciding to issue a ticket.

The chief identified Detective Crosby as one of the investigators involved and encouraged residents to be patient while enforcement continues.

The police report was delivered during the department reports portion of the meeting; council members did not take separate formal action on the announcements.

The council did not provide any new policy direction tied to the arrests or the vehicle purchase during the meeting, beyond standard operational oversight and public acknowledgement of the department's updates.
