Arts Commission selects spoken‑word ‘poetry slam’ for October Arts & Humanities Month

The Sunnyvale Arts Commission voted to pursue a spoken‑word, performance‑based event (variously described as a poetry slam/spoken word program) as its primary project for Arts & Humanities Month in October.

Staff presented three staff‑vetted options — a spoken‑word performance event, a poetry workshop, and a reader’s theater — and said each would be a single‑day, free public program. Commissioners favored the spoken‑word concept for its flexibility and its ability to showcase a range of forms (poetry, hip hop, jazz‑poetry and other performance styles) and audiences.

Staff said the event could be staged at the outdoor amphitheater or indoors at the Civic Center complex, the library or the 200‑seat theater at the Community Center Complex. Staff will develop eligibility and review processes, which could include a jury or staff review, and will consult the city attorney on content and contractual matters as needed.

The commission also asked for one primary contact among commissioners to work with staff on logistics and programming; staff requested a single primary contact while allowing a second commissioner to assist so as not to trigger Brown Act constraints on serial communication. A commissioner volunteered to serve as the primary contact and said they would recruit assistance as needed.

Commissioners approved the staff recommendation by roll call, 4–0 with one excused member. Staff said it will return with details on format, eligibility, age categories and a proposed theme as the lead commissioner works with staff to finalize the program.
