The Sweetwater Authority Finance & Administration Committee on March 3 approved adding an "Associate Engineer" job title to the authority's salary schedule and adopted Resolution 25-2, with the revised schedule effective July 1, 2024 and the title revision effective March 12, 2025.
Staff said the authority decided to strike the word "civil" from the proposed title to avoid any implication the position required a professional engineering license. The position replaces an existing principal engineer slot at a lower salary range and is intended to provide a more junior entry point with career advancement opportunities.
The general manager said the change would create modest cost savings and is being coordinated with CalPERS-required resolution language. Committee members asked about vacancies; staff reported two to three vacant engineering positions (principal engineer, an engineering manager, and the director of engineering) and said recruitment for the associate/manager/director positions would proceed promptly.
A motion to adopt the revised salary schedule and add the associate engineer title passed unanimously on a committee roll call.
Staff said the authority will begin recruiting for the associate engineer position immediately and continue recruitment for the other vacant engineering roles.
