Authority reports abandoned-vehicle tows, abatement fund balance

Del Norte Solid Waste Management staff reported on abandoned-vehicle abatement activity and the authority’s remaining abatement funds.
Staff said in the first quarter 22 vehicles and three recreational trailers were towed; in the second quarter 12 automobiles were towed and no trailers or RVs. As of April 9, 2025, staff reported $44.76 remaining in the abatement funds budget for that line item and that a separate $14,000 appropriation continues through the end of the fiscal year.
Board members asked about timing for placing the abatement budget item on a future agenda; staff said the authority’s budget cycle runs earlier than the county’s and that they would schedule the item during the authority’s budget process next month.
A member of the public thanked staff for their work on tagging and towing vehicles and noted a new officer, Brian Hicks, was assisting with vehicle enforcement. Director Ken Ward said the officer has been busy tagging and towing vehicles and staff are managing the budget to avoid exhausting abatement funds before year end.
