Panel advances technical bill allowing colleges with accreditation candidacy to participate in HOPE scholarship program

Senate Bill 1085, a technical measure to allow institutions that have been granted candidacy for accreditation to participate in the Hope Scholarship Program, was recommended for passage to the committee on the calendar on April 16.
Senator Johnson, sponsor of SB 1085, said the bill would permit institutions such as Williamson College (a private institution cited in committee) that have been granted candidacy by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to be eligible for student participation in the HOPE scholarship while they complete the final accreditation process. The committee took a voice vote and advanced the unamended bill.
SB 1085 will proceed to the Senate calendar for further consideration.
