Senate committee backs resolution urging Congress to expand TBI and PTSD treatments for veterans

The Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee on April 16 recommended House Joint Resolution 0001 for passage to the calendar. The resolution urges Congress to expand and improve efforts to treat traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans.
Sponsor Senator Campbell said TBI and PTSD often co-occur among veterans and can lead to cognitive difficulties, increased suicide risk and opioid dependency. During committee questions, one senator noted the resolution mentions a congressional pilot program to furnish hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the resolving clause references providing veterans access to treatments that include hyperbaric oxygen therapy. That senator said the resolution appeared to advocate a specific treatment. The sponsor acknowledged the concern but said some action was better than none given the significance of the problem.
After limited discussion the committee took a voice vote and recommended the resolution for passage to the calendar.
