A representative of Central Coast Surf Soccer Club told the Paso Robles City Council on April 15 that local youth soccer organizations are struggling to find reliable field space for practices and games and asked the council to place the issue on a future agenda.
"Organizations like ours are struggling to find reliable space for kids to practice and play games," John Brzea said, representing the Central Coast Surf Soccer Club. He said some teams are traveling to San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria to practice and that overcrowding and closures have left teams with unsafe or inadequate fields.
Brzea asked the council to consider forming a working group that would include city representatives and youth sports organizations to produce long-term solutions. He said the request aligned with the city's recreation strategic plan goals to optimize access and forge partnerships.
Community Services Director Angelica Fortin responded that staff is scheduling the conversation for the council's next meeting and has sent a survey to user-group leads to better assess field needs. Fortin said much of the current information is anecdotal and that the survey data will inform reservations and allocation discussions.
The council took no formal vote on the request at the meeting but staff committed to returning the subject to a future agenda for discussion.
