Lenoir County students honored for scholarships, arts and digital learning showcase

The Lenoir County Board of Education recognized dozens of students and staff on April 7 for regional, state and national honors and presented a digital learning showcase from Banks Elementary.
Superintendent Williams and board members highlighted major scholarship winners: Melissa Espino (Goodnight Scholarship, NC State University; also received a Campbell University J.A. Campbell scholarship) and a Park Scholar selection for Rachel (last name not specified in open record), who was also a finalist for the Morehead‑Caine Scholarship. Administrators also recognized students named to North Carolina Governor's School (Alicia Gonzales Gutierrez, Braden Barnett and Kamala Price), national board‑certified teachers added to the district plaque and winners in the Omega Psi Phi Black History Month writing contest and DECA competitions.
Banks Elementary presented a digital learning showcase the board described as a program to help students become experts in topics of interest, develop presentation and technical skills, and produce a project; staff said participation rose from 51 students in year one to 103 in year two when students were given topic choice and in‑school work time. Three student winners — Evan Stahlmaker (soccer), Ava Moore (dance) and Chloe Richardson (women's basketball) — presented slides and short recorded segments demonstrating research, surveys and media used to explain their topics.
The board also received an update on arts programming and All County Chorus/Band, with Dr. Amy Jones describing participation of more than 200 students in All County Chorus and a district art show and band performances directed by clinicians from outside the district.
Board members applauded the students and staff for their achievements and said the recognitions illustrate the district's emphasis on academics, arts and career/technical education.
