District updates board on NCHSAA reclassification and conference assignments for 2025–29

District staff provided a final update April 7 on the North Carolina High School Athletic Association's reclassification and conference alignment, which shifts member schools from four classifications to eight for the 2025–29 cycle.
The presenter reviewed earlier drafts, appeals and the final placements for district high schools. Among the assignments announced: North High School placed in the 3 Rivers 4A conference; South Lenoir High School assigned to an East Central 3A/4A split conference; and Kinston High School placed in the Eastern Plains 2A/3A split conference. The presenter said appeals were allowed and that some appeals were partially successful for other districts, but not fully granted statewide.
Administrators said school principals and athletic directors have begun meeting with fellow conference members to set game schedules, start times, meeting locations and conference budgets. The new alignment takes effect in August 2025.
Board members praised administrators and athletic directors for maintaining athletic relationships across reclassification changes and noted that some nonconference rivalries will continue despite new conference assignments.
