"Within the last hour, somebody vandalized the fiber optic cable of Comcast at Hyde And Geary Street," the presiding officer said. "As a result, we have been advised by the city attorney that due to public notice issues, we have to recess this board meeting until Comcast has restored their service as our board meetings are put forth over television by Comcast."
The presiding officer told supervisors that the estimated time for repair was "not until sometime tonight," and that the actual restoration time remained undetermined. He added: "We are going to recess this board meeting until tomorrow morning at 09:30. We are now in recess. See you tomorrow morning." Those remarks were recorded on the meeting transcript and attributed to the presiding officer.
Madam Clerk conducted the roll call at the start of the session; at that time supervisors Chan, Dorsey, Ingardio/Engadio (name in the roll call was inconsistent in the transcript), Mandelman, Peskin, Preston, Ronan, Safaie and Walton were recorded as present, while Supervisors Melgar and Stephanie were recorded as not present. "Mr. President, you have a quorum," the clerk said before the presiding officer announced the vandalism and the recess.
The board did not take further substantive action on the agenda at the April 11 session after the recess announcement. The board indicated it would reconvene at 9:30 a.m. on April 12 to continue business once broadcast service was restored.
The interruption highlights the board's reliance on commercial broadcast infrastructure for public notice and access; the city attorney's guidance to recess was cited as the reason the session could not proceed while the outage persisted.
