Board backs federal funding request to replace Aquatic Park Pier

The Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution urging Congress to include federal appropriations to replace and reconstruct the Aquatic Park Pier in the Fiscal Year 2020 federal budget.
Supervisor Catherine Stefani (as recorded in remarks by Supervisor Stephanie) described the pier’s history — built in 1933 by the WPA at the site of the Army Quartermasters Pier — and its current state of deterioration. She said the pier protects historic ships at Hyde Street Pier and acts as a safety buffer for swimmers, boaters and the waterfront. Citing National Park Service assessments and recent biennial safety reviews, she said more than 600 pilings and the concrete deck have significant deterioration from winter storms and wave action.
The sponsor said the last major repairs were done in 1948 and that the estimated cost to fully reconstruct the pier has grown from a 2008 projection of $65 million to more than $100 million. She said the city would leverage local, state and federal funds and thanked the delegation and Senator Dianne Feinstein for expressing support during advocacy trips to Washington.
Supervisor Stephanie asked colleagues to join the resolution; Supervisor Safaie added his name as a co-sponsor. The board took unanimous action to adopt the resolution and directed the Clerk to transmit the board's position to the city's federal delegation.
