Board continues Kaiser outsourcing resolution to Oct. 2 after sponsor request

What the resolution sought: The resolution asked Kaiser to preserve direct employment for a range of front-line workers who provide essential services and to consult with unions and affected employees before implementing any outsourcing strategy.
Why it was continued: At the meeting, Supervisor Feuer made the motion "on the request of the sponsor" to continue the item for one week. The board accepted the request without objection; the continuation gave staff, the sponsor and interested parties time to meet and work toward a possible negotiated outcome.
Public comment and labor response: Members of Kaiser's workforce and union organizers addressed the board during public comment, saying the company was beginning to outsource additional groups of employees, including gardeners and messenger staff. "Kaiser Permanente has $29 billion in capital reserves," Pedro Conseil, a union organizer, told the board; "there's no reason why they would want to outsource over 1,000 jobs across the state that are union members."
Next steps: The item was continued to Oct. 2 for further consideration. Supporters of the resolution indicated they intended to return with additional detail and potential amendments. Kaiser representatives were not on the record at the hearing and did not present testimony during the continued session.
