Board president London Breed resigns; supervisors elect Malia Cohen as president

President London Breed announced a resignation from the office of Board President effective at the end of the meeting on June 26, 2018, and the Board of Supervisors immediately moved to accept public nominations and to elect a replacement.
The board unanimously elected Supervisor Malia Cohen as president to serve the remainder of the two-year term, effective at adjournment. Supervisor Jane Kim formally nominated Cohen, seconded by Supervisor Sheehy; the roll call vote recorded 11 “ayes.”
The change in leadership followed remarks by outgoing Mayor Mark Farrell and the clerk’s notification that Breed had submitted a resignation dated June 20, 2018, “effective at the end of today’s regularly scheduled meeting,” citing charter section 2.116 and board rule 6.10.1. With the resignation and the board’s action the same day, supervisors said they intended to maintain continuity in the board’s work during the mayoral transition.
Supervisor Jane Kim, who moved the nomination, said she had watched Cohen “develop and grow both as a public servant and as an elected leader” during their shared time on the board. Multiple supervisors highlighted Cohen’s work on police accountability, the city budget and public-health legislation when announcing their support. Cohen accepted the post on the floor and thanked colleagues; she said the board “will always stand strong and fight for democracy and key San Francisco principles.”
The formal vote and the subsequent remarks closed the special committee of the whole held to receive public comment and process nominations. The board recorded the vote on the dais by roll call; the clerk reported the tally as 11 in favor and no recorded opposition or abstentions.
Going forward, Cohen will serve as board president through Jan. 8, 2019, the end of the current two-year term, unless the board acts again before then.
