Supervisor calls hearing on safety at SFMTA-owned garages after Sutter Stockton incident

Supervisor Stephanie requested a hearing to review public-safety measures at San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) owned and operated parking garages after a series of incidents at the Sutter Stockton garage, including an auto burglary in which a pet dog was thrown from an upper level and died.
"An enclosed large garage space without proper lighting, surveillance cameras, or other safety measures to protect its customers is absolutely unacceptable," Supervisor Stephanie said, urging the board to learn how SFMTA plans to strengthen safety in its garages, including Pier Street and the Lombard Street garages in District 2.
Stephanie said the only way police were able to identify a suspect in the Sutter Stockton burglary was because of a private dashboard camera, not garage surveillance. She asked for a hearing on "the progress of safety measures and procedures in place in city owned and operated parking lots and garages and strategies and plans for future public safety initiatives." She said she expected a report back from SFMTA and asked that the hearing be scheduled as soon as possible.
Supervisor Feuer joined Stephanie in asking follow-up questions at the time of introduction. Several supervisors responded "submit" on the request, indicating support for scheduling the hearing.
Next steps: the board indicated it would schedule the hearing and requested SFMTA to report back on current security measures, lighting, camera coverage, and planned improvements.
